NASCAR at Michigan: Underway after third red flag
Quicken Loans 400 has been red-flagged three times for rain
The Quicken Loans 400 has started. Again.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup race was red-flagged for a third time just after a scheduled competition caution on lap 40. The flag lasted 36 minutes.
The 15th Cup race of the season already had been red-flagged twice - once for nearly an hour after 13 of a scheduled 200 laps around the 2-mile Michigan International Speedway on Sunday, and again for about 34 minutes.
The race finally went green on lap 29 around 3:20 p.m. ET, only to have another storm cell pop up. And guess what? More rain is coming.
Rains swept through the area in the morning and more are expected off and on throughout the afternoon. Thunderstorms are forecast until about 9 p.m. Sunset is scheduled for 9:15. There are no lights at the track.
NASCAR has the Air Titan at the track and already had used it earlier Sunday to dry the track after a morning soak.
Kasey Kahne started from the pole. Carl Edwards was leading when the red flag popped out on lap 14.
This is the sixth of 15 Sprint Cup races to be delayed by wet weather. The race at Richmond international Raceway was postponed from a Saturday night start to a Sunday afternoon start.
