NASCAR will implement restrictor plates at Indianapolis Xfinity race

NASCAR on Thursday released the specifications for the use of restrictor plates in the Xfinity Series race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in July. There are currently no plans, the series said, to use them in an eventual Brickyard 400.

Specifications for the July 22 Xfinity Series race are:

  • Use of a taller spoiler and wider splitter (same dimensions as 2016)
  • Incorporation of aero ducts (which move air out of the front wheel wells)
  • Use of a 7/8-inch restrictor plate

NBC Sports reported this week that NASCAR would utilize the air-choking, horsepower-reducing devices — used at Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway — in the second-tier development series as a means of testing their viability for Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series cars in the 2018 Brickyard 400 at IMS. Success, an unnamed NASCAR official told the outlet, would lead to their use in the Brickyard 400, which has been beset by stagnated racing and coinciding lack of appeal.

NASCAR said through a spokesperson: “We are optimistic about this package. However, there are no plans to implement this package beyond the NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Indianapolis.”
