Kyle Busch treated by medics after NASCAR playoff race at Charlotte

Kyle Busch endured a tough and painful race Sunday at Charlotte Motor Speedway and required medical attention immediately after the conclusion of the Bank of America 500.

Busch hit the wall multiple times throughout the 500-mile event, but was able to complete the first race of the second round of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs with a damaged racecar.

An exhausted Busch collapsed on the infield turf upon exiting his car, laying himself flat on his back as he waited for safety crews to arrive.

After being treated with ice packs and wet towels, Busch was able to get up under his own steam.  He waved to the crowd before walking to the ambulance for further treatment. Samantha Busch reported on Twitter that her husband was receiving oxygen and getting cooled down in the infield care center.

Busch's struggles began in Stage 2 after his No. 18 Toyota made heavy contact with the Turn 3 wall, requiring extensive repairs. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver would later contact the wall at least two more times as his crew worked to salvage the car and allow him to finish the race.

Martin Truex Jr., who won the opening race of the first round of the playoffs at Chicagoland Speedway, took the checkererd flag Sunday at Charlotte to guarantee advancement into the final eight. Busch, who won the other two first-round races — at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Dover International Speedway — finished 29th Sunday, six laps down.

A more refreshed Busch eventually emerged from the care center and briefed NBC on his current state and how tough a day it was:

"I'm better now," the 2015 Cup Series champion said. "I got heat-soaked and felt like I had heat stroke, you know. just from being inside the racecar for 200 laps with the crush panel knocked out of it.

"Obvbiously, (the first contact with the wall) was my bad. I was trying to get a little too much too early in the race. I got too high out of the groove and got myself into the fence and just tore the right side off of it. My guys did a nice job trying to get to back together for the rest of the day. But man it was just evil out there for the rest of the day, just trying to make laps and stay within a relative pace to the rest of the field.

"After I first tore it up, it was just an handful from there on out. And literally, as soon as I did it, just coasting around under caution, you could feel it being about 50 degrees hotter inside the car. It just got so hot, that literally I felt like I was going to puke.

"I was just trying to make it to the end of the race, and luckily we did. From there just trying to get cooled down and get the body temperature back to normal."

Reports suggested that Busch had been breathing in fumes from the damaged car throughout the latter part of the race. Busch said he was told his CO was in double-digits, but he said he didn't feel sick from the fumes, just from the heat.
