Pelicans top list of five biggest surprises so far this season
The first two weeks of the NBA season have come and gone and we've witnessed a lot of what we expected, like a back in form Kevin Durant and a disheartening Philadelphia 76ers squad. But we've also witnessed some things not so expected.
Here are the five biggest surprises of the NBA season thus far:
1. New Orleans Pelicans: There were preseason talks that crowned Anthony Davis as an MVP candidate and listed the Pelicans as a lock for the Western Conference playoffs. While the former may end up coming true, the latter is certainly in question.
They are 0-6 and are allowing a league-high 114 points per game. While three of the losses are justifiable, falling twice to the defending champs and once to the Hawks, a loss at home to the Magic or an 18-point beat down from the Trail Blazers just won't cut it in the merciless West.
2. Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors: We knew that the defending NBA Champions were going to be good … we just didn't know that they were going to be this good. If you doubted them heading into the season — like many people did — they're quickly showing you why that was a mistake.
But with all of that being said, is this really a surprise? Steph Curry is proving once again that he's the real deal. Off to one of the best starts in NBA history, he's showing no signs of slowing down — and neither are the Warriors. They're leading the league in scoring once again, and haven't lost a step on the defensive side of the ball.
Did we mention that they've jumped out to a 8-0 start, and have won those games by an average of 17.8 points, all without coach Steve Kerr?
3. Detroit Pistons: The Pistons finished 2015 with a 32-50 mark in what was their best season since 2009. Off to a 5-2 start, it looks like Stan Van Gundy and company might finally be ready to make basketball relevant again in Detroit.
Three of their wins came against playoff teams from last season. Reggie Jackson has been playing at an elite point guard level, Marcus Morris seems to have found his niche, and Andre Drummond is posting freakish averages of 19.4 points and 19.6 rebounds per game.
4. New York Knicks: They're starting out much better than expected, with notable wins coming against the Washington Wizards and Milwaukee Bucks. But most importantly, even in losses, they have been competitive.
And while losing isn't normally something that's worth talking about, it's the way that they've been losing that has fans excited. It seems that they could quite possibly be taking some steps in the right direction.
Behind solid play from Carmelo Anthony, rookie sensation Kristaps Porzingis is leading the way for the Knicks, earning early season nods for Rookie of the Year. He looks confident and comfortable, putting up 12.3 points, 8.6 rebounds, 1.3 blocks and 1.3 steals a game, making Knicks fans wonder why they ever booed him on draft night.
5. Blake Griffin: Griffin is putting together an MVP-like season so far, averaging 28.6 points, 10 rebounds, and 3.9 assists on 58% shooting. Known for his high-flying athleticism and passing ability, there's never been a question of his elite power forward status. But he's revamped his game once again, as he's been much more efficient shooting mid-range jumpers and has bumped his player efficiency rating up from 22.86 to 31.64.
Honorable mentions: Memphis Grizzlies looking lethargic, Minnesota Timberwolves hot start.
