The Golden State Warriors’ championship-clinching victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday netted the highest TV rating for an NBA Finals Game 5 in nearly two decades.
The ESPN on ABC broadcast had a 16.0 rating in metered markets, the network announced on Tuesday. That’s the highest rating for a Game 5 since 1998 and bested the 2015 and 2016 ratings in those Game 5s by 13%.
The telecast peaked between 11:30-11:45 p.m. ET with an 18.8 rating.
ESPN said the game was the second-most streamed NBA contest with an average audience of 537,000 viewers. Last year’s Game 7 featuring the same two teams still holds the record.
