Chicago Bulls point guard Cameron Payne to undergo foot surgery
Chicago Bulls point guard Cameron Payne will undergo surgery on Sept. 6 to repair a break of the fifth metatarsal of his right foot — an injury he sustained during a workout last month — the team announced Thursday.
Six weeks of rest in a boot was initially prescribed to Payne following the injury, but the team says a subsequent scan and examination this week revealed that Payne's foot has not healed "satisfactorily."
A timetable for his return wasn't given, but he'll likely be sidelined for the start of the season, which tips off on Oct. 17. The Bulls will provide additional updates following the surgery.
This is the third significant right foot injury Payne, 23, has suffered during his two-year career.

Payne, drafted with the 14th overall pick in 2015 by Oklahoma City, was acquired in the February trade that sent Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott to the Thunder. He struggled for Chicago, averaging 4.9 points on 33.3% shooting in 11 games. He also struggled in his two Las Vegas Summer League outings, shooting just 9-for-26 from the field.
The Bulls, who traded away star forward Jimmy Butler in June, are beginning a full rebuild, and the recent over-under win total projections from Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook pegged them at an NBA-worst 21 wins.
Before the injury, Payne was expected to compete with Jerian Grant for Chicago's backup point guard spot behind Kris Dunn.
