Utah Jazz guard Dante Exum could miss considerable time this season with a separated left shoulder, a person familiar with the injury told Paste BN Sports.

The person requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly until the team released a statement.

Exum injured his shoulder during Friday’s preseason game against the Phoenix Suns. Following the game, Jazz coach Quin Snyder said Exum’s injury didn’t look good, and Exum, the No. 5 pick in the 2014 draft, went to the hospital for an MRI Friday evening.

Latest NBA:

The Jazz are taking their time evaluating Exum’s injuries and looking for options that could avoid surgery, which would sideline him for most, if not all, of the season. The team may not formally update Exum’s status until early next week.

The Jazz were expecting Exum to take the next step in his development, especially with the loss of forward Gordon Hayward, who signed with the Boston Celtics during free agency over the summer.

Exum missed the 2015-16 season after tearing the ACL in his right knee while playing for the Australian national team.
