3-for-all: Warriors and Kings set NBA record for combined 3-pointers
Not much time passes in the NBA these days between broken 3-point records. Another mark fell Saturday night.
The Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings put on a shooting bonanza and set a single-game record with 41 combined 3-pointers. Steph Curry hit 10 on his way to a game-high 42 points in the Warriors' 127-123 win.
Golden State shot 21-of-47 from long range, while Sacramento went 20-of-36. It marked the first game in NBA history in which both teams made at least 20 3s. The teams passed the previous mark of 40 3-pointers, set by the Cleveland Cavaliers (21) and Minnesota Timberwolves (19) last February.
"It's a fun way to play, especially when you're shooting a high percentage," said Curry. "You can shoot as many 3s as you want to, but shooting a high percentage the way it was tonight on both ends was pretty crazy."
Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Quinn Cook each added three 3-pointers for the Warriors, while Draymond Green and Andre Iguodala each made one.
Buddy Hield led the Kings with a career-high eight 3s. Justin Jackson made five, Bogdan Bogdanovic had three and Nemanja Bjelica added two. Ben McLemore and Yogi Ferrell each hit one.
"Just an incredible offensive display by both teams," said Warriors coach Steve Kerr. "The problem for us was the (13) turnovers. Every time we turned the ball over it was a 3 or a dunk. That's what kept them in the game."
Curry hit five 3s and scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to help the Warriors recover after squandering double-digit leads in the second and third.
Golden State led by 14 after the first quarter, only to see Sacramento rally to within 70-69 at the break. The Warriors pushed the lead back to 10 early in the third, but the Kings came back again, finishing the quarter strong to go ahead 103-96 heading into the final frame.
The Warriors regained control in the fourth behind Curry. He converted a pair of key 3-point plays the old-fashioned way down the stretch, then sealed the win with two free throws with 9.4 seconds left.
"I hope it was fun to watch," Kings coach Dave Joerger said. "At the end they just clamped down and kept us in front, forcing tough shots."
Durant finished with 29 points and Thompson 20 for the Warriors. Hield led the Kings with 32 points, and Jackson scored 28 off the bench. De'Aaron Fox was limited to eight points, 10 below his season average, on 3-of-12 shooting.
