The start of the 2024-25 NBA season is here, with two games on Opening Night slated for Tuesday followed by the rest of the league's debut on Wednesday. The Boston Celtics are coming off the franchise's 18th NBA championship and they are the preseason favorites to return to the NBA Finals and repeat as champions.

But according to the oddsmakers, there are distinct tiers below the Celtics in the NBA pecking order in terms of who has the best chance to win a title after a busy offseason. There are two main challengers – one from the Western Conference and the other from the Eastern Conference – with five or six teams with championship hopes lurking close behind them.

Then come the NBA Finals dark horses, a group of about nine teams based on the odds. After that is the real longshots, where there's a lot of money to be made if the oddsmakers are wrong but not a lot of reason to believe they are incorrect with their preseason prognostication.

With this season only just beginning, though, that's the fun part now that the games count again. Let's see who overachieves, who underachieves, and who lives up to the hype during this NBA season.
