The Dallas Mavericks believed Anthony Davis made them a more viable NBA championship contender than Luka Doncic did.

That, according to Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison, was the impetus behind the stunning NBA trade earlier this month that sent Doncic from Dallas to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for a package led by Davis. The deal was immediately hailed a victory for the Lakers after they acquired a 25-year-old superstar who had just led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals, and this feeling has only been reinforced by Davis' availability ahead of Tuesday's game between Dallas and the Lakers.

Davis, 31, was the best player on the court in his Mavericks' debut on Feb. 8, but exited the win over the Houston Rockets in the third quarter. He hasn't played since then. Doncic, meanwhile, has returned from the calf injury that sidelined him since Christmas and just had his best performance with the Lakers before facing his former team.

Here's the latest update on Davis' injury and his status for Tuesday's first game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks since the trade involving him and Doncic:

No. Davis will not be active when the Mavericks face his former team for the first time since trading him on Tuesday night in Los Angeles. Davis is listed as out on the Dallas injury report for its game against the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena.

Davis was diagnosed with a left adductor strain after leaving his first game with the Mavericks. The team announced last Thursday it would re-evaluate the 6-foot-10 forward/center in two weeks but that he was "making good progress." Davis suffered an abdominal strain on Jan. 28 before the trade while still playing for the Lakers. He is now expected to miss at least 10 games.
