Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry is joining his alma mater's efforts to adapt to the professionalization movement in college sports.Davidson College announced Monday that Curry will serve as an assistant general manager for the men’s and women’s basketball teams at the school he nearly led to the Final Four back in 2008. Curry and his wife, Ayesha, as well as longtime Davidson supporters Matt, Don and Erica Berman, are creating an eight-figure fund to support Davidson basketball as part of the endeavor.

“The Davidson experience is top notch,” Curry said in a statement through the school. “My journey from when I got to Davidson in 2006 to now demonstrated that I had the opportunity to play basketball at the highest level, got a great education, an amazing network through the Davidson alumni and continue to wave the Davidson flag. I want very talented, high character student athletes to have that same experience.”

Davidson officials said they approached Curry about this volunteer advisory role. It's in conjunction with the expected implementation of revenue sharing in college sports beginning next season and the continued importance of money related to name, image and likeness in the current recruiting landscape. Curry will become the first active player in U.S. major professional sports to take an administrative job with an NCAA team, according to ESPN.

Davidson, which is currently a member of the Atlantic-10 Conference, previously announced it would opt in to the proposed NCAA settlement that would create revenue sharing between schools and their athletes.

Curry will work alongside Austin Buntz, who Davidson also announced Monday as its new general manager and assistant athletic director for basketball development. Buntz is a former member of the global basketball sports marketing team at Under Armour, which sponsors Curry, and has been on the athletic fundraising team at Davidson since 2021.

Fellow alum Matt Berman – a former Davidson soccer player who also owns a stake in English soccer club, Burnley FC – will also work as an assistant general manager for Davidson.

Curry played at Davidson for three seasons (2006-09) and was twice named conference player of the year before winning four NBA titles and two MVP awards with the Golden State Warriors. He set the NCAA record for 3-pointers in a season as a sophomore while leading Davidson to the Elite Eight of the 2008 NCAA Tournament.

Curry completed his undergraduate degree from Davidson in 2022, when he was also inducted into the school's hall of fame.
