76ers' Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid won't play in summer league

Philadelphia 76ers fans will have to wait a little bit longer to see 2016 No. 1 overall pick Ben Simmons in action.

The team announced Monday that Simmons — who missed his entire rookie season after breaking his right foot in September — and Joel Embiid — the Rookie of the Year candidate whose impressive campaign was shut down after 31 games due to a torn meniscus in his left knee — won't participate in summer league in July.

The news doesn't come as much of a surprise given their injury history, and it's nice to see the Sixers err on the side of caution with the two players viewed as franchise cornerstones.

The 76ers, who have a 75-253 record over the past four seasons, also have the third pick in this year's draft, and if their young building blocks can stay healthy, the team has an undoubtedly bright future ahead.

The Sixers are scheduled to play in the Utah Summer League from July 3-6 and the NBA Summer League from July 7-17 in Las Vegas.
