Russell Westbrook not amused by Mavericks' pregame antics
If there's one thing that we learned about Russell Westbrook during Game 2 between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Dallas Mavericks on Monday night, it's that he takes his pregame dance routine very seriously.
Right before tip-off, Westbrook and rookie point guard Cameron Payne were showcasing their intricate pregame handshake as they often do, but before they were able to finish, found out that Mavericks rookie Justin Anderson and veteran Charlie Villanueva aren't too fond of the dance moves.
Westbrook pushed Villanueva and Anderson out of the way, finished the routine, checked into the game, and that was the end of that.
At least, for the time being.
After the game (which the Thunder lost in heartbreaking fashion), a couple of players from both teams spoke about the "incident."
"I wanted to get invited to the party, but I didn't get no invitation," Villanueva said with a smile, per The Dallas Morning News. "They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I was waiting for my teammates."
Anderson, who joined in on the routine-spoiling after Villanueva took the lead, said that the altercation was nothing.
"Nah, nothing happened," Anderson said, per ESPN. "He was doing his, what do they call it ... The 'Hit That Folks' with Cam Payne that they always do, and I think Charlie got in the middle just to get his feet wet or whatever. It was nothing. It was nothing. Both teams were ready to play. You could see it. Both teams were ready to play."
Westbrook and long-time teammate Kevin Durant, who combined to shoot just 15-for-55 in the loss, weren't so amused.
"That's fake (expletive)," Durant said in the postgame press conference.
"Yeah, that's fake," Westbrook repeated. "That's for guys that don't play."
Villanueva did in fact play zero minutes in the game, and Anderson played just 14. Westbrook and Durant, on the other hand, well ... we know how much they play.
The two teams will meet for Game 3 on Thursday in Dallas with the series tied at one game apiece.
