NCAA roundup: Cincinnati surges past Central Florida
CINCINNATI (AP) — Justin Jackson matched his career high by blocking seven shots and Sean Kilpatrick scored 19 points with a strong second half that carried No. 16 Cincinnati to its 11th straight win Thursday night, 69-51 over Central Florida.
Cincinnati (19-2, 7-0 American Athletic) is off to its best start since 2001-02, when it was in Conference USA. The Bearcats' winning streak is their longest since they opened last season with 12 wins.
And it's been mostly a matter of defense. The Bearcats have held their last 27 opponents under 70 points, the longest active streak in Division I. They took control of this one by opening the second half with an 18-5 run.
Central Florida (9-8, 1-5) has lost four in a row. The Knights were only 5 of 16 from the free throw line, had 14 turnovers and shot 34 percent from the field.
No. 22 Memphis pounces on Houston
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Shaq Goodwin had 20 points, Joe Jackson added 18 points and seven assists, and No. 22 Memphis jumped out to an early lead in an 82-59 victory over Houston on Thursday night.
The Tigers (14-4, 4-2 American Athletic Conference) never trailed and led by 17 in the first half of their fourth win in five games.
Meanwhile, the Cougars (11-8, 3-3) have lost three of four.
TaShawn Thomas led Houston with 14 points and Brandon Morris added 13. LeRon Barnes finished with 10 points, connecting on all four shots from the field.
L.J. Rose had 10 assists for the Cougars, who shot 42.6 percent but committed 18 turnovers.
Parker powers UCLA over Stanford
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tony Parker scored a career-high 22 points and UCLA used a big first-half run to cruise past Stanford 91-74 on Thursday night, ending the Cardinal's three-game winning streak.
The Bruins (15-4, 4-2 Pac-12) have won nine of their last 11 against Stanford, including a sweep last season. Jordan Adams added 19 points, Kyle Anderson had 13 points, seven rebounds and 10 assists, and Norman Powell had 13 points.
Stanford (12-6, 3-3) was led by Dwight Powell with 17 points and 13 rebounds, and Josh Huestis had 12 points and 12 rebounds. Chasson Randle came in averaging 19.5 points, but was held to 14 points on 3 of 16 shooting. The Cardinal has lost nine straight at Pauley Pavilion dating to January 2005.
The teams were nearly even over the game's first nine minutes after Stanford started with three turnovers and two missed shots.
Washington hands Oregon another Pac-12 loss
SEATTLE (AP) — C.J. Wilcox scored 23 points, including a 3-pointer with 43 seconds left, leading Washington to an 80-76 win against Oregon on Thursday night.
Wilcox scored six points in the final 2½ minutes as Washington (12-8, 4-3 Pac-12) held off Oregon (13-5, 1-5) down the stretch, extending the Ducks' losing streak to five games. Andrew Andrews added 17 points for UW.
Oregon trailed by seven points with 2:59 to play and cut the margin to 73-72 when Wilcox made his 3 that essentially sealed the win for Washington and ended the Huskies' own two-game skid.
Joseph Young scored 18 points to lead Oregon and scored six points in under a minute to spur Oregon's rally after Washington grabbed the seven-point lead.
Young led the Ducks with 18.0 points per game coming in, but had been held to five points in both of Oregon's last two games against Oregon State and Stanford.
