Wednesday tip-off: Kansas pays a visit to Georgtown
Setting up the day in college basketball:
Best bet: No. 10 Kansas wears the big target tonight as the Jayhawks hit the road to take on Georgetown ((7 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1). The Hoyas dropped two of their three games against a tough field in the Bahamas at the Battle 4 Atlantis a couple of weeks ago and will be eager to grab a quality win before embarking on their Big East campaign.
The Georgetown roster features plenty of underclassmen this year, so a lot more is being asked of junior G D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera. Kansas hasn't exactly been a well-tuned offensive machine thus far — though to be fair any encounter with Kentucky is going to hurt your numbers — but veteran F Perry Ellis has been more assertive during the Jayhawks' current five-game winning streak.
Number of the day: 27.9. Just how scary is top-ranked Kentucky's defense? The Wildcats are holding opponents to a field-goal accuracy rate of 27.9%, the stingiest in the nation. Lots of luck tonight for Columbia as the Lions from the Ivy League get a taste of Rupp Arena (7 p.m. ET, ESPN2).
Words of the day: "It's a great college basketball environment, and it certainly gets revved up when you've got the rivalry game. ... We've got to figure out a way to neutralize it. There's a lot of energy in the building." — Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak at his weekly news conference about the challenge his No.14 Utes face Wednesday night at archrival Brigham Young's Marriott Center (9 p.m. ET, ESPNU). Due to scheduling issues, the "Holy War" rivalry had to take a hiatus this year in football, so the intensity on the hardwood should be at full volume.
Days until Selection Sunday: 95.
