Monday tip-off: Road tests for Kansas and Wisconsin
Setting up the day in college basketball:
Best bets: It's a busy Monday schedule as teams try to get in a last game before the holiday break. Of particular note, a couple of top-10 teams will be facing potential road hazards in an ESPN2 doubleheader.
No. 10 Kansas starts things off as it heads east to meet Temple (7 p.m. ET). Though the Owls are 7-4, they have yet to lose on their home floor. In addition, they just gained the services of a pair of transfers that could help them match the Jayhawks' depth. Jesse Morgan and Devin Coleman, transfers from UMass and Clemson, respectively, each made an immediate impact as they made their season debuts for Temple in a win at Delaware. But the Jayhawks, who just got a breakout game from freshman Kelly Oubre, are finding more answers themselves.
No. 6 Wisconsin heads to the other coast and might get an even tougher challenge from California (9 p.m. ET). The Golden Bears enter the week with a 10-1 mark that includes a win against Syracuse. The only loss was to ninth-ranked Texas. Leading the way for Cal is do-everything G Tyrone Wallace (19.5 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 4.4 apg). The Badgers will hope G Traevon Jackson can keep Wallace out of rhythm to enable Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker to dominate the paint.
Even farther west, the Diamond Head Classic begins in Honolulu. Headlining the eight-team field is No. 11 Wichita State, which will take on Loyola Marymount in its quarterfinal.
Number of the day: 19:53. No. 5 Virginia's 76-27 dismantling of Harvard on Sunday produced its share of statistical anomalies. Perhaps the most unbelievable number was the time elapsed between the Crimson's first and second made field goals of the game. The first came with 16:31 remaining in the first half. The second came just seven seconds shy of an entire half later, with 16:38 to go in the second. By that time, the Cavaliers, who led 39-8 at intermission, were well on their way to a rout that bore a striking resemblance to Kentucky's treatment of UCLA a day earlier.
Words of the day: "If they continue to play at that level defensively, I'm a firm believer they got a chance to run this thing out." — UCLA coach Steve Alford, after watching the afore-mentioned top-ranked Kentucky roll to an 83-44 victory against his Bruins Saturday, a game in which the Wildcats scored the first 24 points and led 41-7 at halftime.
Days until Selection Sunday: 83.
