No. 9 Iowa State routs Mississippi Valley State
AMES, Ia. -- Fred Hoiberg's 100th victory as Iowa State's men's basketball coach was one of his easiest, unless you term a 83-33 pasting of Mississippi Valley State a nail-biter.
His ninth-ranked team ran, they shot well from all spots on the floor, they dunked, and they blocked shots against a 1-12 team that has played just one home game.
It was a perfect appetizer for what comes Saturday – a 5 p.m. game against Frank Martin-coached South Carolina at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Hoiberg is 100-48 in four-plus seasons of the first coaching job of his life, and he's the quickest Iowa State coach to reach that milestone, bettering Larry Eustachy, who reached 100 in his 157th game as the Cyclones coach.
Iowa State improved its record to 10-1, and faces a team Saturday that's 8-3. Then it's 18 Big 12 Conference games in a row, starting at 8 p.m. Tuesday against Oklahoma State at Hilton Coliseum.
It was 47-18 Iowa State at the end of a first half in which the Cyclones made 20 of their 30 field-goal attempts. Their only early-game flaw was free throw shooting, where they missed six of their first eight.
This was such a breeze that Hoiberg pulled his starters with 10 minutes to play, Iowa State leading 70-28.
Naz Long was a dead-eye, making 7 of 10 shots, all from 3-point range, en route to a season-best 24 points for the guard.
