No. 18 Oklahoma drubs rival No. 24 Oklahoma State
NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Buddy Hield scored 27 points on 10-for-10 shooting to help No. 18 Oklahoma defeat No. 24 Oklahoma State 82-65 on Saturday night.
Jordan Woodard scored 13 points, Ryan Spangler had 11 points and 11 rebounds and TaShawn Thomas added 10 points for the Sooners (12-5, 3-2 Big 12), who snapped a two-game skid and got their third win over a ranked team in conference play.
Oklahoma State's Le'Bryan Nash and Phil Forte, the top two scorers in the Big 12, were held in check. Nash scored 15 points, but he made just 6-of-15 shots. Forte scored 11 points on 3-for-11 shooting.
Leyton Hammonds scored 15 points and Anthony Hickey added 14 for the Cowboys, who lost their second straight.
Oklahoma State missed its first 15 three-pointers before finally making one with just over 11 minutes remaining. The Cowboys (12-5, 2-3) shot 37 percent overall.
Oklahoma State hung around early, but Oklahoma extended its lead late in the first half. Hield caught a long pass from Jordan Woodard and converted a layup, then Hield made a three-pointer on the next trip down the floor to put the Sooners up 33-16 with just over four minutes left before the break. Another 3 by Hield extended the lead to 20.
Hield scored 18 points on 6-for-6 shooting in the first half to give the Sooners a 41-20 lead at the break. The Sooners shot 61% in the first half, and the game was never close after the break.
The Sooners finished the game in style. Hield threw down a powerful putback jam, then Spangler dunked on Oklahoma State's Michael Cobbins, the No. 2 shot blocker in the Big 12. Spangler made the free throw after Cobbins' foul to put Oklahoma up 78-59, prompting Oklahoma's fans to chant "Little Brother."
TIP-INS: Oklahoma State — The Cowboys went 0-for-13 from three-point range in the first half and 7-for-13 after the break. ... Cobbins, who entered the game with a block in all but one game this season, finished with one.
Oklahoma — Thomas, Oklahoma's No. 2 scorer for the season, did not take a shot in the first half and did not score. He played just seven minutes because he picked up two quick fouls. ... Oklahoma outscored Oklahoma State 16-8 from the free-throw line.
