Philadelphia's Herb Magee gets his 1,000th career win
Philadelphia University men's basketball coach Herb Magee finally exhaled, while all those around him celebrated.
By beating Post University 80-60 Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia, Magee became just the fourth men's college basketball coach at any level to win 1,000 games. Magee has won all of these games at his alma mater, which competes in Division II. Magee was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2011.
In the lead-up to No. 1,000, Magee tried to downplay the accomplishment.
"It'll be a big deal," Magee told Paste BN Sports two weeks before. "The only thing I'm looking forward to is getting it over with. I don't want it to be a distraction for the players. I'm not trying to win 1,000 games; I'm trying to win the next one. Then the next one. Then the next one, so we can get in the conference playoffs. Then, do well in the conference playoffs so we can go to the NCAA championship."
All five of the Rams starters had double figures in the win, bringing them to 15-6 on the season.
