Bowling Green fires Chris Jans; video shows coach harassing woman
Bowling Green fired coach Chris Jans on Thursday following "an investigation into his recent public conduct," the university said in a statement.
The university said "Jans' public conduct failed to meet his obligations as a head coach" but did not specify what the conduct was.
SI.com, among other media outlets, obtained video and a termination letter from the university that revealed the first-year coach exhibited drunken and inappropriate behavior at a local bar on March 21. The video, which was originally provided to the school by an eyewitness and has since surfaced on the Internet, shows Jans touching a woman on the buttocks.
In the termination letter, according to SI.com, Jans admitted to publicly inappropriately touching two women and calling a third woman a derogatory name, which led to a confrontation. The university also noted in the letter it doesn't plan to pay Jans for the remaining money on his contract — five years with more than $1.6 million. Jans is married and has two children.
The former Wichita State coach led the Falcons to a 21-12 record — a nine-game improvement — in his first year at Bowling Green. The Falcons went 1-1 in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament after an 11-7 mark in the Mid-American Conference.
Assistant Mark Downey is taking over day-to-day operations of the program while a search for a replacement begins.
