Marvin Menzies agrees to become UNLV's coach
New Mexico State's Marvin Menzies has agreed to a deal to become UNLV’s men's basketball coach, the school announced Saturday. The deal is pending a review from the Nevada System of Higher Education board of regents.
The announcement comes a day after Chris Beard, named UNLV’s coach three weeks ago, bolted for Texas Tech. Recently fired Sacramento Kings coach George Karl also was making a push for the job, Paste BN Sports reported Friday.
Menzies had coached New Mexico State for nine years, leading it to its fifth consecutive 20-win season in 2015-16. He worked as an assistant at UNLV in the 2004-05 season.
"Marvin is an experienced head coach with UNLV and West Coast roots who knows what it takes to build and maintain a winning college basketball program," UNLV President Len Jessup said in a release.
"He is a dynamic recruiter and proven leader who understands the proud tradition of UNLV basketball, and we look forward to welcoming him back to campus."
