New Mexico State vs. New Mexico basketball game postponed after deadly campus shooting
Saturday's college basketball game between New Mexico and New Mexico State was postponed after a deadly shooting on New Mexico's campus.
According to the New Mexico State Police, they received a report concerning an altercation at 3 a.m. between a 19-year-old male and a 21-year-old male in which both men suffered gunshot wounds.
"In light of the tragic incident earlier this morning on the University of New Mexico campus, the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University have jointly decided to postpone this evening's men's basketball contest between the schools," a joint statement from both schools said. "Our thoughts are with all of those impacted by this tragedy."
The university had issued alerts notifying the campus that the shooting happened near Alvarado Hall, a student dorm.
The 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene and the 21-year-old male was transported to an area hospital for treatment and was identified as New Mexico State basketball player Mike Peake, a 6-7 junior forward from Chicago who began his career at Georgia and Austin Peay before transferring to New Mexico State.
Peake's condition is not known at this time.
The game was originally scheduled to be played at The Pit in Albuquerque at 7 p.m. ET, where an estimated 13,000 fans were expected to attend.
Authorities said the incident is in the preliminary stages of investigation. The investigative units, including New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau and the University of New Mexico Police Department, say there is no ongoing threat to the community.
