With hotels full, Kentucky dorms will house teams for NCAA baseball regional in Lexington

Baseball teams will be staying in on-campus housing at the University of Kentucky for the Lexington Regional of the NCAA Tournament, which begins Friday. The NCAA made the Wildcats hosts after the program finished with a 36-18 record.

However, there are no available hotels for teams in Lexington this weekend because the Railbird Music Festival, which features headliners Tyler Childers and Zach Bryan, and the high school state track and field, softball and baseball playoffs are also being held in the city.

Kentucky offered apartment-like residential halls on campus to the four participating teams and secured hotel rooms in Louisville, which is about an 80-mile, hour 1/2 drive from campus, according to a statement the NCAA gave to the Lexington Herald-Leader.

During the bidding process, Kentucky was transparent about the lodging situation. The school communicated with the NCAA selection committee and answered all questions, said Matt May, Kentucky's associate director of athletics communications.

"After thoroughly discussing the arrangements with Kentucky's athletics administration, the committee voted to accept the university's bid as a top-16 seeded regional host," the NCAA statement read.

Ball State and Indiana told Paste BN Sports their teams chose to stay on campus instead of in Louisville. Kentucky said its baseball team and West Virginia will also use the school's accommodations, which include housekeeping, dining options, 24-hour security and is walking distance to the ballpark.

Visiting fans and family members may not be so lucky finding house close to campus.

"Our student-athletes had a sensational regular season and earned the right to compete in the opening rounds in their home venue," May said. "We are incredibly excited to host this weekend and show attending fans what a vibrant place Lexington is.”
