Alabama breaks NCAA Tournament record for 3-point shots attempted, made in Sweet 16 rout of BYU
Alabama basketball filled up the stat sheet so much it spilled over into the record books in a dominant win over BYU on Thursday to advance to the Elite Eight.
The Crimson Tide broke two 20-plus-year-old records — 3-point shots attempted and 3-point shots made — in their rout of the Cougars. They made 25 threes and attempted 51, breaking the previous records of 21 and 43, respectively.
Editors note: The box score lists Alabama at 25 made threes, rather than the 26 mentioned in the following post.
Loyola Marymount made 21 threes against Michigan in 1990 en route to a 149-115 laugher over the Wolverines in the second round. Saint Joseph's, meanwhile, attempted 43 triples in the second round against Boston College in 1997 in a much more modest 81-77 win.
Alabama ultimately defeated BYU 113-88 to advance to the weekend against the winner of the Duke-Arizona game behind held later Thursday night.
Mark Sears led the way, going 10-for-16 from deep, with Aden Holloway nipping at his heels off the bench at 6-for-13. Chris Youngblood was the other notable contributor, going 5-for-11.

The Crimson Tide made 21 triples in the victory, accounting for more than half of their final score. They also put up a whopping 51 attempts, or 77% of their shots from the field (they shot 66 field goals total).

In both the regular season and postseason, Alabama was approaching the makes record but was nowhere near the summit for attempts.
Troy made 28 3-point attempts on 74 attempts against George Mason in 1994, two records that still stand.
