Texas PG Isaiah Taylor likely out for several weeks
NEW YORK -- Texas isn't expecting to have the services of talented sophomore point guard Isaiah Taylor for at least a couple of weeks, after Taylor suffered a left wrist injury Thursday night in a game against Iowa.
He did not play in Friday's game against California -- a 71-55 win -- and his wrist was in a splint and his arm in a sling Friday night. He did not speculate on what he felt the injury would be, or if it were a fracture.
"We're going to go back to Austin and re-evaluate there," Taylor told reporters Friday night at the conclusion of the Longhorns' trip to New York City.
Taylor does, however, expect that the injury will sideline him several weeks, which means he could miss up to three marquee upcoming games: at defending national champion Connecticut (Nov. 30), an SEC/Big 12 Challenge road matchup with top-ranked Kentucky (Dec. 5) and a home game against Stanford (Dec. 23).
"I'm assuming a couple of weeks right now," Taylor said. "I'm hoping it's nothing too serious."
Through three games, Taylor was averaging 15 points, four rebounds and 2.3 assists.
In Taylor's absence on Friday, junior guard Javon Felix scored nine points, had four assists and grabbed three rebounds. Texas coach Rick Barnes said he expects Felix to perform well playing this necessary role, and he brought up Felix's past experience in a similar situation -- when Myck Kabongo was suspended 23 games during the 2012-13 season.
"He went through three-quarters of the season," Barnes said. "We knew he could run the team. It's certainly a little different tempo. Isaiah pushes it a little bit, Javon advances it with the pass. But he was really locked in."
For now, Barnes will make do with a Taylor-less roster, and he'll expect it to remain that way for at least a portion of the remainder of the non-conference season.
"We are what we are without him," Barnes said. "I would think it'll be a while."
