Baylor's Rico Gathers charged with shoplifting from Wal-Mart
Baylor forward Rico Gathers was charged on Thursday with shoplifting from a Wal-Mart in Waco, Texas.
Gathers is accused of stealing a cart full of household items — two pillows, a tote bag, water dispenser and trash can — that were valued at $171, according to Waco Police via the Waco Tribune Herald. A store employee identified Gathers before notifying police two days later. He provided video surveillance footage and Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton noted that store employees suspected Gathers had stolen items on previous visits to the store.
Gathers turned himself in Tuesday and was charged with theft under $500, a class B misdemeanor. He was released Wednesday after posting $1,000 bail.
Baylor coach Scott Drew released the following statement on Wednesday in response to the incident:
"We are aware of the situation involving Rico Gathers and are in the process of gathering the facts to determine what transpired," Drew said in the statement. "It would be inappropriate for me to comment further at this time."
Gathers, 21, is married and has a one-year old son. He's expected to return for his senior season after earning all-Big 12 honors for the Bears in 2014-15. The 6-8 forward averaged 11.6 points and 11.6 rebounds.
