No. 5 Xavier narrowly avoids upset to Creighton
Clutching to a one-point lead with five seconds left, Creighton couldn't hold on to pull off a momentous upset over No. 5 Xavier. The Musketeers' Quentin Goodwin drew a foul and sunk a pair of free throws with one second remaining to help the Musketeers survive a 72-71 thriller at Omaha.
Fueled by Marcus Foster's 29 points and a raucous home crowd, the Bluejays seemed determined to pull off the upset. Xavier's national player of the year candidate, Trevon Bluiett, went cold — scoring just six points on the night. Goodwin paced the Musketeers with 17 points, J.P. Macura had 15 points and nine rebounds.
Xavier had just moved to a No. 1 seed in Paste BN Sports' latest bracketology projections, and this survival win likely keeps the Musketeers at that seed line.
Meanwhile, Creighton had a chance to stay far away from the NCAA tournament bubble and secure its Big Dance invitation but came up just short on Saturday.
