SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Rhode Island, making its first NCAA tournament appearance in 18 years, upset No. 6 seed Creighton 84-72 Friday during a first-round matchup at Golden 1 Center.

Rhode Island, a No. 11 seed, never trailed and Jeff Dowtin, a freshman guard, led with 21 points while former Rhode Island basketball star Lamar Odom watched from the stands.

It was Rhode Island’s first NCAA tournament victory since 1998, when the Rams beat Valparaiso 74-68 in the Sweet 16.

On Sunday Rhode Island will play No. 3 seed Oregon, which defeated Iona 93-77 earlier Friday.
