Auburn coach Gus Malzahn: 'Somehow things work out'
Auburn coach Gus Malzahn got home in time to see the last possession of the Big Ten Championship but didn't see the fourth-down stop that essentially ended No. 2 Ohio State's 24-game win streak and BCS championship quest.
"We listened to it," Malzahn told Paste BN Sports on Saturday night.
Michigan State's Denicos Allen stuffed Buckeyes quarterback Braxton Miller on fourth down at the Spartans' 37 yard line with a little less than six minutes left. That play was key to Michigan State's 34-24 Big Ten title victory and integral to Auburn's likely clinching of a berth in the BCS National Championship Game in Pasadena, Calif.
A little earlier, as the third quarter began in Indianapolis with the Spartans up 17-10, a mass email from Auburn's media relations department hit inboxes everywhere. Subject: "Auburn Football Résumé." Earlier in the evening No. 3 Auburn had beaten No. 5 Missouri 59-42 for the SEC Championship.
But Malzahn thought Auburn had already made its case, and he said he wasn't anxious about the Big Ten outcome. "We had a huge win," he said. "To be honest with you I thought that was enough. But somehow things work out."
