Navy extends football win streak vs. Army to 13 games
BALTIMORE — Breaking down Navy's 17-10 win against Army on Saturday:
THE BIG PICTURE: Navy beat Army for the 13th time in a row. But unlike typical games in that streak, the Midshipmen had to battle to the finish. Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds gave his team a 17-7 lead early in the final quarter with a 1-yard touchdown sneak. It was Reynolds' 62nd career rushing touchdown, extending his NCAA record for quarterbacks.
Army's Daniel Grochowski hit a 52-yard field goal with 1:51 left to make it 17-10. Navy recovered Army's attempt at an onside kick to secure the win.
Army's lone touchdown came when it blocked a punt on Navy's first series and Xavier Moss carried the recovery into the end zone. Army starting quarterback Angel Santiago was replaced in the second half by A.J. Schurr. A season ago, Schurr started against Navy but was replaced by Santiago after a first-quarter fumble. Schurr lost a fumble in the fourth quarter Saturday with Army in Navy territory.
WHAT WE'LL BE TALKING ABOUT: Army finished 4-8 in its first season under new coach Jeff Monken, a former Navy assistant. When will Army finally snap the streak? Navy (7-5) moves on to a Dec. 23 Poinsettia Bowl matchup against San Diego State. Reynolds will get another chance at more touchdowns in pursuit of the all-time NCAA record of 77 rushing touchdowns in a career by Montee Ball of Wisconsin (2009-2012).
BREAKOUT PLAYERS: Army linebackers Andrew King and Jeremy Timpf, both sophomores, combined for 26 tackles.
KEY STAT: Army didn't compete a pass until a trick play with under four minutes left: Tight end Kelvin White threw a 17-yarder to running back Joe Walker. Army totaled 37 passing yards; Navy had 77. Both teams run the triple option.
