College bowl pools: Nuggets you need to know

Here are the successes and failures of bowl seasons past by each power conference from a Las Vegas perspective.

Bowl results date to 1980 unless noted.

SU represents a straight-up result. ATS represents an against-the-spread result. Teams that qualify for specific categories in bowls this season are listed in parentheses.

ATLANTIC COAST

Overall bowl record: 96-87 SU, 97-82-6 ATS

Noteworthy: ACC bowl teams are 4-1 ATS vs. 6-6 opponents (Boston College; Miami, Fla.).

Best result: Florida State is 9-1 SU and 8-2 ATS in its last 10 bowl games.

Worst result: Duke is 0-4 SU and 1-3 ATS in bowl games. Its last bowl win was in the 1961 Cotton Bowl.

You need to know: ACC bowl teams off a pair of SU losses are 12-8 SU and 15-5 ATS, including 7-1 ATS as favorites (Miami).

BIG TEN

Overall bowl record: 89-114-1 SU, 96-104-4 ATS

Noteworthy: Like Florida State last season, Ohio State is the only Football Bowl Subdivision squad to outgain every opponent this season.

Best result: Iowa is 6-0 ATS as a single-digit underdog in its last six bowl games.

Worst result: Minnesota is 0-6 SU and 2-4 ATS in its last six bowl games.

You need to know: Big Ten bowl teams that allowed 38 or more points in their final games of the season are 4-16 SU and ATS (Maryland, Rutgers, Wisconsin).

BIG 12

Overall bowl record: 65-66 SU, 55-76 ATS

Noteworthy: Big 12 bowl favorites are 1-14 ATS vs. .750 or greater opponents since 2003 (Baylor, Kansas State, TCU).

Best result: Texas is 9-3 SU in its last 12 bowl games.

Worst result: Kansas State is 2-6 SU and 1-7 ATS in its last eight bowl games.

You need to know: While TCU will be eager to show the playoff committee it blundered in the final rankings, Horned Frogs head coach Gary Patterson is 0-5 ATS in his last five bowl games.

PAC-12

Overall bowl record: 88-78-1 SU, 84-81-2 ATS (includes former Pac-10 and Pac-8)

Noteworthy: The Pac-12 is 1-5 SU and 2-4 ATS in bowl games vs. undefeated opponents (Oregon).

Best result: Southern California is 8-2 SU and ATS in its last 10 bowl games.

Worst result: Arizona State is 1-5 ATS as a bowl favorite.

You need to know: Pac-12 teams off a SU double-digit win are 13-3 SU and 14-2 ATS since 1997 (Stanford, Southern California).

SOUTHEASTERN

Overall bowl record: 135-96-3 SU, 123-109-2 ATS

Noteworthy: SEC bowl teams are 15-4 SU and ATS in bowl games when playing off a SU favorite loss in their final game of the regular season (Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi State).

Best result: Mississippi is 10-1 SU and ATS in its last 11 bowl games, including 6-0 SU and ATS its last six.

Worst result: Arkansas is 5-14 SU and ATS in bowl games since 1984.

You need to know: Eleven SEC teams participated in 10 of the 16 Bowl Championship Series title games. They went 9-2 SU and 10-1 ATS, losing only to Florida State last season and each other (LSU to Alabama) in 2012.

SUPER STAT

Notre Dame is 1-10 SU and 0-11 ATS in bowl games vs. an opponent off a SU win since 1995.
