Jameis Winston's attorney calls sexual battery lawsuit 'a stunt'
An attorney for Jameis Winston released a statement in response to a lawsuit filed against the quarterback Thursday by Erica Kinsman, a former Florida State student who alleged Winston raped her in 2012.
"This stunt was expected," said David Cornwell, an attorney who has been advising Winston. "Ms. Kinsman's false accusations have already been exposed and rejected six times. This time will be no different. Mr. Winston welcomes the opportunity to clear his name with the truth."
Kinsman's lawsuit, filed in circuit court in Orlando, alleges sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress arising out of forcible rape. She is seeking a jury trial and damages in excess of $15,000.
Winston was not charged criminally after an investigation nearly a year later. A Florida State hearing conducted by former Florida Supreme Court Justice Major Harding nearly two years after the alleged assault found Winston was not responsible for violating the student conduct code. That decision was affirmed by a FSU administrator last month.
Winston is expected to be the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft on April 30.
