Wednesday Tailgate: Toughest draws of Week 3
Week three will present plenty of appetizing matchups. But the college football season is still young, and there will still be plenty of mismatches. As always, some of those will find the power conference member in a not-so-friendly mood.
Here, then, are this week's nominees for Wouldn't Wannabe U.
Idaho State: The Bengals weren't likely to challenge Boise State in any event. But the Broncos figure to be particularly cranky Friday night after becoming the latest victims of BYU and "Mangum Magic."
Norfolk State: The Spartans will be facing their third FBS opponent in as many weeks. Though they stuck with Rutgers for a half and held up fairly well against ODU last weekend, Saturday's trip to Marshall doesn't look as promising. The Thundering Herd are coming off a 21-10 loss to Ohio, one of their former foes from their days in the Mid-American Conference, and will be eager to iron out their offensive troubles against this week's visitors from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Northwestern State: The Demons already felt the — er — rage of the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette a week ago. Now all they have to do is head to Starkville to face an angry Mississippi State. The Bulldogs couldn't escape an early hole against LSU, so they will almost certainly put a priority on starting fast.
Western Carolina: Tennessee took a lot of heat when it couldn't seal the deal against Oklahoma. The Catamounts are going to be the recipients of some Vol venom.
And the winner is...
Georgia State: The Panthers are to be commended for earning their first road win against an FBS opponent and first Sun Belt Conference victory last week when they defeated New Mexico State. At some point, they'll get a second one — but not this week. Quite simply, this is a bad time to have a trip to Oregon on the schedule. The Ducks are known for putting up big numbers against overmatched opponents on any day, and they'll be especially salty Saturday thanks to last week's setback at Michigan State.
