Wednesday Tailgate: Five teams we'll know better soon

We've nearly reached the quarter pole of the 2015 college football season. But it's still September, and that means there are still a lot of teams we have yet to identify as contenders or pretenders. Here are the top five clubs we'll know a lot more about after this weekend.

Arizona

The Wildcats can be forgiven for not scheduling any Power Five conference opponents for their non-league slate. The Pac-12 figures to be challenging enough, and the Wildcats have no idle weeks in their schedule. That part of the journey begins Saturday as UCLA comes to Tucson. Standout Wildcats LB Scooby Wright, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery after sustaining an injury in the opener against UTSA, is back in practice, but his availability won't be known until later in the week.

Oklahoma State

The Cowboys are just one of seven Big 12 squads who have not tasted defeat as conference play kicks off this weekend. Their first league opponent, Texas, is not one of those seven. But the Longhorns appear to have at least found their offensive identity with quarterback Jerrod Heard now at the controls. Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph can also put up a big score, but the Cowboys' defense should get a major challenge.

Florida

The Gators do have an SEC victory in hand, and it came on the road against an improved Kentucky team that was highly motivated to end a long stretch of futility against Florida. But this week the Gators host similarly motivated Tennessee. The Vols, who are expected to contend for the East Division but came up short in their biggest non-conference test against Oklahoma, have a bit to prove themselves. The Gators' agile freshman QB Will Grier will likely have to do more to keep pace with Tennessee's more experienced Joshua Dobbs.

Utah

The Utes passed their first test in Week 1 when they subdued Michigan. But now comes their first Pac-12 game as well as their first road challenge — and it's a doozey. Utah heads up to Eugene to take on Oregon, where the Ducks will be doing everything in their power to avoid a second loss that would all but eliminate them from the playoff picture before the calendar turns to October.

Texas Tech

Time will tell how much weight the Red Raiders' Week 3 victory at Arkansas will carry. But we're about to find out if Kliff Kingsbury's bunch can hang with the Big 12 favorites as they prepare to host No. 2 TCU.
