Auburn safety Stephen Roberts arrested on multiple charges
Auburn safety Stephen Roberts faces charges for attempting to elude police and possession of a handgun without a license, according to a police report obtained by Paste BN Sports on Friday.
Roberts was arrested at 9:53 pm Wednesday after a vehicle he was in was stopped by Auburn (Ala.) police, Capt. Lorenza Dorsey said in an email.
"He exited from the passenger side of the vehicle and fled from officers during the stop," Dorsey told Paste BN Sports. "He didn’t physically resist arrest when he was taken into custody."
During the course of the traffic stop, a handgun was found. Under Alabama state law, it's illegal to possess a handgun in a vehicle without a permit.
AL.com was the first outlet to report Roberts' arrest. The website reported Roberts was booked into the Lee County (Ala.) Detention Center, where he posted a $2,000 bond for two misdemeanor counts and released.
"Coach (Gus) Malzahn is aware," an Auburn spokesman said in a statement Friday obtained by AL.com. "He is gathering all the facts and will handle the situation appropriately."
Roberts, a junior, played in every game for the Tigers last season and was the team’s starting strong safety late in the season.
Four other Auburn players have been arrested this offseason. Byron Cowart, Carlton Davis, Ryan Davis and Jeremiah Dinson were arrested for misdemeanor possession of marijuana in April.
