Key injuries on college football's first Saturday
Ohio State broke its single-game record for offense by 60 yards on Saturday, but it may have suffered a significant loss on defense.
Buckeyes junior defensive tackle and team captain Tracy Sprinkle left his team's 77-10 win vs. Bowling Green in the first quarter with a right leg injury. Coach Urban Meyer said afterward that the injury is to Sprinkle's right patellar tendon, one that will require season-ending surgery. Sprinkle played in all 13 games for the Buckeyes as a sophomore. "Our prayers are with Tracy," Meyer said.
Ohio State junior linebacker Dante Booker sprained a knee in the game, but reports say his injury is not serious.
Navy: Navy starting quarterback Tago Smith suffered a knee injury on a 22-yard run early in the second quarter of the Midshipmen's 52-16 victory against Fordham. Smith had rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries at that point. Navy's coaches brought in backup Will Worth, a senior, for the second and third quarters and made headlines with what they did after that.
Tago's status going forward is unknown.
West Virginia: Senior starting running back Russell Shell gained 90 yards in the Mountaineers' 26-11 win vs. Missouri but left with an undisclosed leg injury in the third quarter.
Junior college transfer Justin Crawford relieved Shell and rushed for 101 yards and a third-quarter touchdown.
