How Amway Coaches Poll top 25 teams fared in Week 6
The highlight of Week 6's matchups was No. 7 Texas A&M escaping No. 9 Tennessee in a two overtimes. And the biggest upset came with Navy knocking off No. 5 Houston and all but shattering the Cougars' slim Playoff hopes.
Other top-25 upsets included No. 21 Florida State storming back to top No. 10 Miami, Virginia Tech beating No. 16 North Carolina and USC taking down No. 23 Colorado.
Here's a look at all the results:
► No. 1 Alabama (6-0) rolled past No. 17 Arkansas (4-2), 49-30.
Alabama's defense scored for the sixth and seventh times this season and forced a season-high five turnovers. But it was a balanced quick-strike, big-play offense that paved the way for the Crimson Tide. Top-ranked Alabama recorded five scoring drives of 1:48 or quicker and finished with 517 total yards in taking care of the Razorbacks on the road.
► No. 2 Ohio State (5-0) was too much for Indiana (3-2), 38-17.
Freshman running back Mike Weber rushed for two touchdowns and quarterback J.T. Barrett ran for one and threw for a score. Barrett did most of his work with his feet instead of his arm against the Hoosiers, rushing for a game-high 137 yards on 26 carries as the Indiana pass defense gave the Buckeye more trouble than expected.
► No. 3 Clemson (6-0) crushed Boston College (3-3), 56-10. (Friday)
Deshaun Watson threw for four touchdowns and Clemson showcased its quick-strike big-play capabilities in this rout. The third-ranked Tigers bolted to a 21-3 lead in the first quarter and coasted.
► No. 4 Michigan (6-0) obliterated Rutgers (2-4), 78-0.
Michigan put together one of the most dominant efforts in its rich history holding Rutgers to only 39 total yards in a drubbing. The No. 4 Wolverines allowed just two first downs in 18 Rutgers' possessions. Rutgers has been outscored 136-0 in its last two games. It lost to Ohio State 58-0 on Oct. 1. The margin of victory was the third highest in Michigan history and the second-highest since 1920. Michigan piled up 600 yards -- 481 on the ground.
► Navy (4-1) upset No. 5 Houston (5-1), 46-40.
With every Navy touchdown, Houston saw its hope of playing in the Playoff become a little more distant. After the Cougars had their quest for an unbeaten season dashed, all they could do is shrug. Houston committed three turnovers, gave up two points on a poor snap in punt formation and simply couldn't find a way to stop Navy's triple option.
► No. 6 Washington (6-0) routed Oregon (2-4), 70-21.
Sophomore quarterback Jake Browning accounted for eight touchdowns as Washington snapped a 12-game losing streak to Oregon with a shellacking. Browning was 22 of 28 for 304 yards and six touchdowns while running for two touchdowns. The Huskies finished with their highest point total since 1944.
► No. 7 Texas A&M (6-0) survived No. 9 Tennessee (5-1), 45-38, in two overtimes.
In a double overtime thriller between two top-10 teams from the SEC, No. 7 Texas A&M prevailed. Barely. In the second overtime, Aggies quarterback Trevor Knight rushed in for the game-winning touchdown and DB Armani Watts had an interception to seal the win. Knight, who finished with 239 yards passing and two touchdowns in the air, had another crucial score on the ground in the fourth quarter on a 62-yard run to put the Aggies up, 35-21. But Tennessee wouldn't go away and stormed back to force overtime behind two Alvin Kamara touchdowns — the first on a 4-yard run with 2:07 left and then the next on an 18-yard reception with 41 seconds remaining in regulation.
► No. 21 Florida State (4-2) stormed back to clip No. 10 Miami (4-1), 20-19.
The Seminoles scored 20 consecutive points in a furious comeback to top their in-state rival. FSU defensive end DeMarcus Walker blocked what would be a game-tying extra point by Miami with 1:38 left in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Deondre Francois threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns, while Heisman candidate Dalvin Cook caught for 150 yards.
► Washington State (3-2) took down No. 15 Stanford (3-2), 42-16.
Luke Falk threw for 357 yards and four touchdowns to lead Washington State to a 42-16 win against No. 15 Stanford. Making matters worse for the Cardinal, who suffered losses in consecutive weeks for the first time under coach David Shaw, was the fact that star Christian McCaffrey went to the locker room in the second half with an apparent injury and didn't return to the game.
► Virginia Tech (4-1) knocked off No.16 North Carolina (4-2), 34-3.
Virginia Tech smothered North Carolina's potent offense and quarterback Jerod Evans threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in a romp that was played in heavy rain from Hurricane Matthew. The Hokies limited the Tar Heels to 131 yards of total offense by far the lowest figure under coach Larry Fedora. Evans rushed for 76 yards on 17 attempts and threw for 75 yards on 7-for-17 passing.
► No. 19 Boise State (5-0) handled New Mexico (2-3), 49-21. (Friday)
Sophomore quarterback Brett Rypien passed for 391 yards and a career-high five touchdown passes as the Broncos trounced New Mexico. Senior receiver Thomas Sperbeck had nine catches for 198 yards -- all in the first half while junior wideout Cedrick Wilson set career highs with nine receptions 167 yards and three touchdown catches.
► No. 22 Oklahoma (3-2) survived Texas (2-3), 45-40.
Baker Mayfield passed for 390 yards and three touchdowns — all to Dede Westbrook — and Samaje Perine ran for 214 yards and two scores the Sooners escaped with the win. The combined 85 points were the most ever in the history of the Red River Showdown. Oklahoma is now 6-1 when the two sides have combined for 70 or more points.
► USC (3-3) defeated No. 23 Colorado (4-2), 21-17.
USC quarterback Sam Darnold threw three touchdown passes to offset his three turnovers as the Trojans held on to beat Colorado. USC was in control for much of the game but needed to answer after Colorado tied the score at 14 with 10:20 left on a 10-yard pass from Steven Montez to receiver Bryce Bobo. The Trojans responded with a 70-yard drive capped by a 7-yard pass to tight end Tyler Petite his second scoring reception of the day.
► No. 24 Utah (5-1) topped Arizona (2-4), 36-23.
Quarterback Troy Williams' three touchdowns helped No. 24 Utah rally from an early 14-3 deficit to earn a bounce-back win.
► No. 25 Western Michigan (6-0) beat Northern Illinois (1-5), 45-30.
