College football games today: Georgia-Texas headlines SEC, Big Ten Saturday showdowns
The weather around the country is starting to get cooler and the stakes each week in college football keep rising. Whoever said the regular season wouldn't matter as much with an expanded playoff field and rampant conference realignment ruining regional rivalries might well be right, but the trade off isn't so bad when the schedule gives us some of the games it will in Week 8.
Just call it a showdown Saturday in the SEC and Big Ten, with two conference games in each league whose result figures to have a big impact on the race to the first 12-team College Football Playoff.
The marquee matchup pits No. 1 Texas against No. 4 Georgia in prime time, with the Longhorns looking to cement themselves as the national championship favorite. The SEC's afternoon matinee features No. 7 Alabama at No. 11 Tennessee in a game neither can afford to lose if it wants to feel comfortable about postseason positioning moving forward.
IN DEPTH: Georgia made Kirby Smart college football's highest-paid coach. But at what cost?
The Big Ten, meanwhile, has two ranked-vs-ranked matchups with No. 22 Michigan visiting undefeated No. 21 Illinois and No. 25 Nebraska hitting the road to play undefeated No. 18 Indiana. There are six undefeated teams in all, and 18 ranked teams total, playing games Saturday. There's bound to be meaningful developments.
