The most compelling show in Las Vegas tonight will be a few miles south of the city’s famed Strip.
On Friday night, No. 19 Boise State will square off against UNLV in a matchup that will go a long way in determining the Mountain West Conference championship and, potentially, which Group of Five squad will earn a spot in the 12-team College Football Playoff.
The Broncos and Rebels enter the game with one loss apiece, with the former falling on the road by three to No. 1 Oregon and the latter getting knocked off in overtime against Syracuse. If nothing else, Friday’s game should be a high-scoring affair, as both programs rank among the top five teams nationally in scoring offense, with Boise State at No. 3 (46.8 points per game) and UNLV at No. 5 (43.6).

The Broncos have what appears to be the Heisman Trophy front-runner on their team in running back Ashton Jeanty, who has racked up 1,248 yards and 17 touchdowns in the first six games while averaging 9.9 yards per carry. If Boise State makes the Mountain West championship game and Jeanty doesn’t opt out of a bowl game, the 5-foot-9, 215-pound junior is on pace to break Barry Sanders’ FBS single-season rushing record.
Boise State’s defense will be left to contend with a UNLV offense that has scored at least 40 points in four of its seven games this season. The Rebels haven’t lost a step after losing quarterback Matthew Sluka in a highly publicized dispute over NIL payments. In four starts since Sluka’s departure, Hajj-Malik Williams has completed 70.5% of his passes for 838 yards, 10 touchdowns and just two interceptions while rushing for 302 yards and four touchdowns.
