Heading into the weekend, No. 10 Boise State will host No. 19 UNLV in the Mountain West Conference championship game, with the winner virtually assured of being one of the five highest-rated conference champions and earning a spot into the 12-team playoff field.
The Broncos and Rebels are No. 10 and No. 20, respectively, in the most recent rankings from the playoff selection committee, placing them comfortably ahead of No. 24 Army, the next-closest team from outside the Power Four conferences. If Ashton Jeanty and Boise State are able to pull off the victory, it’s quite possible they remain ahead of the Big 12 champion, either Arizona State or Iowa State, and earn one of the spots reserved for the four highest-rated conference champions, which would give them a first-round bye in the playoff.
The game’s a rematch of a closely contested 29-24 victory for the Broncos in Las Vegas on Oct. 25. While Jeanty rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown in the win, he was held to a season-low 3.9 yards per carry by UNLV’s defense.
