The first round of the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff is officially in the books.

No. 8 Ohio State defeated No. 9 Tennessee 42-17 to conclude the first round and set the stage for the quarterfinals on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back in the victory over the Vols.

Now the Buckeyes are prepared for a Big Ten Conference rematch against No. 1 Oregon (13-0) on New Year's Day in the Rose Bowl. The Ducks pulled off a 32-31 victory over the Buckeyes in Eugene, Oregon earlier this season. The Buckeyes lost to Michigan in the season-finale to prevent a rematch in the conference championship game vs. Oregon.

Oregon and Ohio State have split the previous four games against each other. The winner of their Rose Bowl meeting will advance to the semifinal round. Ohio State is searching for its first national championship since 2014, while the Ducks are going for their first ever.

Saturday was the Buckeyes' first College Football Playoff win since a 49-28 victory over Clemson in the 2021 Sugar Bowl semifinal. The Buckeyes lost to Alabama 52-24 in the national championship.
