Coastal Carolina vs. UTSA: Predictions, odds, how to watch Myrtle Beach Bowl

Add the 2024 Myrtle Beach Bowl to the list of college football bowl games affected by the opening of the transfer portal this month.

Two teams with 6-6 records will meet Monday when Coastal Carolina faces Texas-San Antonio in its home stadium, and yet the Chanticleers are decided underdogs despite the familiar environment.

Coastal Carolina has had at least 25 players enter the transfer portal since the conclusion of the regular season, including starting quarterback Ethan Vasco and his backup, Noah Kim. The Chanticleers will be forced to turn to redshirt freshman Tad Hudson or freshman Alex Walker, neither of whom have appeared under center in a college game before.

"You're not building a program anymore," Coastal Carolina coach Tim Beck told reporters last week while discussing the situation. "This isn't a program. Each year, you just build a team. You try to find the best team that you can put out there every year, and you know the team is going to get hit by free agency."

UTSA's roster, meanwhile, appears to be mostly intact and the Roadrunners are coming off a strong close to the regular season to get bowl eligible for the fifth year in a row under coach Jeff Traylor. Quarterback Owen McCown, the Colorado transfer and son of former NFL quarterback Josh McCown, leads an offense that averaged nearly 42 points over its final six games.

Sports Illustrated: UTSA wins

"UTSA is expected to have a majority of its roster accounted for and looking to finish the season on a high note while we can’t seem to find the bottom for this Coastal Carolina roster with a handful of impact players hitting the transfer portal."

Sporting News: UTSA 31, Coastal Carolina 27

"UTSA won four of its last six games just to get bowl eligible — and Owen McCown (3,170 yards, 24 TDs, 9 INTs) had a strong season at quarterback. The Chanticleers lost four of their last six games. Those trends don't always matter in bowl games, and the Chanticleers are at home here."

College Football News: UTSA 34, Coastal Carolina 23

"UTSA isn’t a full go personnel-wise, either, and the home field angle will make a bit of a difference, but one team has its quarterback – Owen McCown is a good one – and the other side is starting fresh. The Chanticleers will be just good enough defensively to keep this close and interesting, but there will be too many offensive misfires."

The Athletic: Heavy lean toward UTSA

All but one of The Athletic's nine experts picking bowl games this year predicted UTSA would beat Coastal Carolina in the 2024 Myrtle Beach Bowl.
