The 2025 Sugar Bowl was postponed in wake of a tragic attack early Wednesday morning on Bourbon Street in New Orleans that the FBI is investigating as an act of terrorism. Bowl game officials announced the change in schedule in conjunction with a news conference with state, local and law enforcement leaders just hours before the No. 2 seed Georgia Bulldogs and No. 7 seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish were originally scheduled to kick off in a College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup at Caesars Superdome.

The Sugar Bowl subsequently announced the game is now slated to take place on Thursday at 4 p.m. ET. Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley initially said, "it's in the best interest of everybody and public safety that we postpone the game for 24 hours." Both teams had the option to seek an earlier start time than the previously planned 8:45 p.m. ET Wednesday kickoff for rest and recovery purposes, according to an ESPN report.

The deadly incident in New Orleans happened around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday morning when an armed man drove a pickup truck into a large crowd on Bourbon Street and started firing on police officers from inside the vehicle, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 30 people. The FBI said an ISIS flag, weapons and a potential IED were located in the subject’s vehicle. Other potential IEDs were also found in New Orleans' French Quarter, according to the FBI
