ACC fines Louisville, Virginia Tech $25,000 each in Wake Forest scandal

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced Saturday it has fined Louisville and Virginia Tech $25,000 each in the aftermath of the Wake Forest leak scandal.

The funds received from the two fines, which are the highest allowed by the league’s bylaws, will be placed into the Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship account. The league also said it fully supports Louisville's decision to suspend co-offensive coordinator Lonnie Galloway, who the school said received information.

Wake Forest announced this week that an internal investigation had concluded that former assistant coach and broadcaster Tommy Elrod has provided or attempted to provide confidential game-plan material to opponents on multiple occasions since 2014.

The league determined that there were three school involved: Virginia Tech (2014), Louisville (2016) and Army (2014, 2016).

“I am deeply disturbed something like this would occur, and regardless of the degree of involvement, the protection of the competitive integrity of our games is fundamental to any athletic contest,” said ACC Commissioner John Swofford. “Sportsmanship and ethical values are at the core of competitive integrity and in these instances, those were missing. The expectation, regardless of the sport, is that any athletics department staff members would immediately communicate with their supervisor if they are approached by someone from another institution with proprietary information.”
