It’s a college football rivalry so intense that its annual matchups aren’t described as “games,” but a “war.”
The latest installment of “the Holy War” between in-state foes BYU and Utah will kick off this weekend, with the teams meeting for the first time as fellow members of the Big 12.
The contest will feature a highly ranked team with College Football Playoff aspirations against a middling squad likely just hoping for bowl eligibility — but the roles are reversed from what many thought they would be coming into the season.
Picked to finish 13th among 16 teams in the Big 12’s preseason poll, BYU is undefeated and ranked No. 9 in the US LBM Coaches Poll. If the season ended today, it would be among the 12 teams in the playoff field after being ranked No. 9 in the initial CFP rankings. (Because of bracket seedings, the Cougars would be seeded No. 4 overall with a first-round bye).
Utah, meanwhile, is 4-4 overall and 1-4 in conference play after being picked to win the Big 12 in its inaugural season in the league and starting the season at No. 13 in the Coaches Poll. The Utes have been burdened with a number of setbacks, namely a season-ending injury to star quarterback Cameron Rising.

“I’m picking BYU to win because this season has been so magical for the Cougars. They’ve found ways to win, be it on offense (OSU) or defense (SMU, Baylor, Kansas State). Also, BYU has a better quarterback. That goes a long way in rivalry games. Just look at 2021, when Jaren Hall-led BYU downed the Utes in Provo, before Utah somehow discovered that Cam Rising was better than Charlie Brewer. For BYU, the Cougars need to withstand the early emotional rush that the crowd will bring to the Utes, and not turn it over and give whoever is Utah’s QB a short field — and some early confidence.
