The second-to-last game of a busy Week 12 of the 2024 college football season just so happens to be one of the most consequential.
No. 8 BYU, which moved up to No. 6 in the most recent College Football Playoff rankings earlier this week, will put its undefeated record on the line when it takes on Kansas this weekend at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah.
The Cougars have been one of the surprises of the season, a team picked to finish 13th in the 16-member Big 12 in the preseason that is now the conference’s lone remaining unbeaten program. With even one loss in its final three games, coach Kalani Sitake’s team would advance to the Big 12 championship game, where it would almost certainly earn a spot in the playoff with a victory.
BYU has played with fire at times this season, though, as four of its nine wins this season have come by a single score, including a 22-21 victory last week against archrival Utah that it won with a go-ahead 44-yard field goal with three seconds remaining.
The Cougars could potentially face a similarly stiff challenge from Kansas, which has been a disappointing 3-6 this season, but has won two of its past three games. Most recently, the Jayhawks blew past then-No. 18 Iowa State 45-36 last Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
