New Mexico sophomore safety killed in car accident

New Mexico safety Markel Byrd, a redshirt sophomore safety from San Diego, was killed Tuesday and his girlfriend was in critical condition after their car crashed following a tire blowout on U.S. 40 near Gallup New Mexico, the school announced

Both were ejected from the vehicle. Byrd died instantly. No other motor vehicles were involved.

"This is an absolute tragedy. Markel Byrd was an outstanding person and student-athlete and we will miss him," Lobos coach Bob Davie said in a statement from the school. "I was with the family late Tuesday night and obviously they are devastated. Our thoughts and prayers go to them. Markel will forever be a member of our family."

Byrd, 20, was in his third season in Albuquerque after redshirting in 2013. He tied for the team lead in interceptions this season with three and was eighth on the team with 44 tackles.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
