Arizona star linebacker Scooby Wright to be out 3-4 weeks

Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said Monday preseason All-American linebacker Scooby Wright will miss 3-4 weeks recovering from a left knee injury suffered in Saturday's 42-32 victory against Texas-San Antonio.

Rodriguez said Wright had arthroscopic surgery for a meniscus tear Saturday. There was initial concern the injury could end Wright's season. The junior, who was the Pac-12 player of the year last season and was selected as a preseason All-American by Paste BN Sports, was injured in the first quarter and spent the second half in street clothes, walking with a cane.

"We'll get him back in a few weeks," Rodriguez said at Arizona's weekly news conference. "Whatever limits he has, he'll stretch it to the limit. That's his personality."

Arizona, No. 22 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll, sputtered on offense against UTSA in the opener, allowing 525 total yards. Haden Gregory, a walk-on, will start in place of Wright. Arizona's next four matchups are: at Nevada, at home against Northern Arizona and No. 14 UCLA, then at No. 21 Stanford.

Rodriguez said of Wright's injury, "it's an opportunity for our other guys."
