Comparing the preseason Coaches and AP football polls
To the surprise of no one, Alabama is No. 1 in the preseason Paste BN Sports Coaches Poll and the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
The exact same pool of 25 teams made the two polls, with Notre Dame (11th in the Coaches Poll, 14th in the AP) having the greatest disparity in its ranking.
Since Paste BN Sports began in its involvement with the Coaches Poll in 1991, this is the seventh time the same 25 teams have appeared in both preseason polls. The other years were 1993, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2004 and 2007. The most the two polls have disagreed was in 1994, 1996 and 2003, when the two polls each had three different teams.
Sometimes differences occur because of NCAA sanctions. The coaches, by rule, do not vote for teams that are on probation, which leads to situations like last season when Ohio State was No. 2 in the final AP poll but was not ranked by the coaches.
How do this season's preseason top 25s compare? Here's a complete breakdown:
