Georgia safety Richard LeCounte injured in motorcycle accident after returning from Kentucky game

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Georgia football senior safety Richard LeCounte was involved in a traffic accident involving multiple vehicles after returning to Athens, Georgia, following Saturday’s game at Kentucky.
“He was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center where he was treated in the trauma center,” said Ron Courson, UGA director of sports medicine, in a statement. “He is still in the hospital for further medical care. His injuries are not life-threatening and a full recovery is expected.”
Athens-Clarke County police responded Saturday evening to the area of 520 Macon Highway to investigate the incident, according to information provided to the Athens Banner-Herald by Sgt. John Williams late Saturday night.
LeCounte was driving a dirt bike when he struck two other vehicles in an incident that sent the senior to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital, according to Athens-Clarke County police.
He was was transported to a local hospital and family and team officials were notified. The investigation is ongoing.
“We would like to thank the emergency medical technicians, physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel who helped care for Richard,” Courson said. “Richard’s family would also like to thank everyone for their thoughts, prayers and well-wishes during this time.”
Georgia’s chartered planes arrived in Athens after 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
LeCounte had a career-high 13 tackles, recovered a fumble — the sixth of his career — and had three pass breakups in the 14-3 victory.
The preseason All-American leads Georgia with three interceptions and is third on the team with 26 tackles.
His 33 career starts are the most of any current Georgia player, and he’s started 23 games in a row.
Georgia plays Florida in Jacksonville on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
